Seit der Antike verk\u00f6rpert dieser kleine, schwarz-gelb gefleckte Amphibien die au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche Tugend, der zerst\u00f6rerischen Kraft des Feuers unversehrt zu widerstehen. Ein kaltbl\u00fctiges Wesen und Liebhaber feuchter Umgebungen, soll es sich angeblich von Flammen ern\u00e4hren, um sich zu w\u00e4rmen.<\/p>\n

Zudem sondert der Salamander, wenn er bedroht wird, durch seine Giftdr\u00fcsen eine Fl\u00fcssigkeit ab, die beim Angreifer sofort eine Entz\u00fcndung hervorrufen kann\u2014eine Eigenschaft, die seine symbolische Verbindung zum Feuer im Laufe der Zeit verst\u00e4rkte.<\/p>\n

Im Mittelalter wurde das Feuer, insbesondere der Scheiterhaufen, zur Waffe, mit der die K\u00f6rper und Seelen der S\u00fcnder verbrannt wurden, um sie von dem B\u00f6sen zu reinigen, das ihr Leben verderbt hatte. Der Salamander, der dem Feuer jedoch trotzt, wurde in mittelalterlichen Bestiarien mit dem Mut jener verbunden, die freiwillig ihre irdischen Leidenschaften ersticken und sich f\u00fcr ein tugendhaftes Leben als guter Christ entscheiden.<\/p>\n

Mit der Renaissance bereicherte sich das Symbol des Salamanders um neue Bedeutungen. In der k\u00f6rperlichen Liebe, die oft als verzehrendes Feuer dargestellt wird, erkennt man nicht mehr nur die S\u00fcnde, sondern auch die Zerbrechlichkeit der menschlichen Natur, die ihrem Bann nicht entkommen kann. Der Liebende kann diesem feurigen Begehren, das ihn umh\u00fcllt, verbrennt und verzehrt, nicht widerstehen; er n\u00e4hrt sich davon, zwischen Qual und Freude zerrissen. Der Wunsch, sich in dieser grausamen und s\u00fc\u00dfen Qual zu sonnen, findet in der Poesie einen seiner k\u00fchnsten Ausdr\u00fccke und wird im Symbol des Salamanders sublimiert.<\/p>\n
